Awesome… so people assume, that my “concerns” are things that I think will definitely effect my experience in the game, and thus, I must be an idiot.
So…It’s fun explain myself in detail for the people that punish me for being lazy in the first place;
1) This was where I expressed a concern for a lack of large scale instances/raids. My fault for not explaining myself more thoroughly. GW2 has Dynamic Events, or as they are know in every other MMO, Public Events/Rifts/etc. These are great in concept. The reality in my personal experience (which would include both WAR and Rift) is that once out of the “leveling” area, no one wants to go back and do the events again. Yes, Arenanet is scaling players up and down in these events to encourage people to come back and do them. In all likelihood, given players tendency to chew through content, this won’t really ever happen. This is of course based on the standard MMO player arch-type, and not the uberGW fanbois that go slumming it in level 10 content. As a side note, from the beta vids I’ve seen, Arenanet has shown a single large scale event, that was in the 60ish area. We have no information on how many of these there are, or how early they start (unless I missed something somewhere).
2) MMO skill level. This is pretty cut and dry. Most MMO players are bad, or at least casual. It’s not to say that people won’t adapt, it’s just going to be an issue where the first few months are going to be brutal, until the skilled players adjust, and the shit players go back to stand and press MMOs like WoW. If anyone has ever pugged in any MMO, ever, and dares to question this fear…well…I don’t even know what to say to you.
3) The complaint I’ve heard from almost every test report, is that although the game looks amazing, the engine was poorly optimized. I simply list this as a concern, as engine “quality” was a huge issue in SWTOR, as the engine was terrible. This will be a concern for a lot of player that are running lower end machines, that are playing game like WoW right now. Amazing as it is, in a MMO, if the engine effects other players in your group, it directly effects your enjoyment of the game. This is honestly the least of my concerns. Having worked in application development in the past, I’m well aware that “getting stuff to run smoothly” is basically the last major part of the dev process.
4) Boring combat. GW2 is an Action MMO. It is not a new concept. You will spend the vast majority of your time using your short cool down spells (i.e. 1-5) and dodging. As amazing as this sounds, in practice it is not that much better from the standard MMO rotation based combat. Any WoW player that has played a class with a “wack-a-mole” CD based rotation will tell you this. In addition to this having played the TERA beta, and the “less” static SWTOR, I can say at least from a person perspective, move movement does not always equal fun. It’s up to Arenanet to create compelling content that forces the player to think, rather than do what other Devs have done in the past, which is regurgitate encounters from WoW.
5) Much of Mists is done. Class balancing has barely been touched, but anyone that plays WoW knows that means very little. Simple fact of mathematics WoW has 10 million players, GW2 has 0. As I stated in my original post, as much as a lot of players say they hate WoW, it’s very difficult for people to give up on something they have invested so much time in.
6) 4 and 6 were basically the same point. I have watched enough of the GW2 clips to see that the combat looks very “same-y” to other action MMOs. These are fresh to players that have never played them, but the exceptionally limited skills available at a give time is not always a lot of fun, especially if the content only requires you to you 3-4 abilities.
Now, in hope to stop people from QQing and claiming that I’m a WoW fanboi (which I’m not really), I’m going to counter point myself, so no one else can do it.
1) The Dynamic events look really interesting, and paired with toon scaling it could be the fix for what has made public quests suck in the past. Also, the difficulty on even the story mode versions on the dungeons appear to be more difficult than even the most difficult of standard MMO dungeons (5 man shit..relax WoW fans). Content above 5 man in an instance/raid will not work because of a lack on a trinity…which is a good thing. Content will always feel fresh, since you won’t be doing the same thing every time you run it.
2) Fuck pugs. Seriously. LFG sucks in standard MMOs cause pugs are filled with shortbus riders and douchebags. If they think the content is too hard, then we’re better off with out them. Challenge is what brings out “fun” for a lot of players. The standard MMO fare right now (WoW, Swtor, Rift) are all just clones of each other, and the clones are all easy.
3) Game looks good, and if you have a bad computer, you’re not going to be able to play anyways. Game is still a ways out… so complaining about this now is a moot point. Fuck off and stop being a douche.
4) The content will make combat exciting. Even with 10 Hot keys, you will still have a minimum of 15 abilities (with hot swap weapons), plus all abilities from 6-10 have multiple options, so you can swap out of combat to have what will work best in a given encounter. In a way this will just minimize the number of buttons you don’t use, unlike other MMOs, where you have 35 abilities with 5 you use on a regular basis.
5) Mists will have no effect. The people that are sick of WoW have already left. No one is really claiming this is a WoW killer, Blizzard is going to slowly do it to themselves by nerf beating everything for people. Much like Swtor, GW2 will be fine at launch. Given that AN have a lot more experience with MMOs than Bioware, they will likely do a better job of listening to the players and doing what the community desires.
6)…same as 4…fuck you’re a noob.
Well, I’m glad that is out of my system. Honestly, I love that people glazed over that fact that I said the game looks amazing, and that I was going to buy it. Honestly, my biggest concern is that GW2 is going to bring the elitist d-bags from WoW over. In the mean time, I’m going to continue to count down to April 10th, and then I’m going to pre-order my copy.
My Asura Guardian awakes.
/end crazy rant.
Some of these were a legitimate opinion that really won’t be solved until day 1, others, well not so much. As for #3, game engine “badly optimized”? Not sure where you might have gotten such information but Anet has stated several times that they have tested the game in a variety of “ancient” machines with success. Also, some beta testers manage to get the beta client working on a Mac, and seeing how the GW2 engine is a revamp of the first, I’m pretty certain the game engine is fairly optimized. SWTOR’s engine on the other hand was rushed and it’s quite noticeable.
Also there is no scaling up. #4 will be answered once you play the actual game, just like all other concerns that apply to almost all new MMOs. Uncertainty is a scary thing.
I really do hate that drowning feeling and even worse is when I can’t shake it off. Time to go on a long walk.
yeah guys let’s go SWIMMING
in my POOL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FUCKING RIVER
WAT
FOOLS! That’s new orleans after Katrina!
haha, I don’t know how I’d react if this happened to me. Would I be more excited for the chips?
I’d be more concerned about how dirty the bed is. If anyone puts food on my bed I will destroy them.
I’d put some sauce on that.
Fun time spreading the plague… wait! I ran a red/white-artifact-rush-burn-I-don’t-even deck. Good times good times. Would play again.
